Our Story
Every dream has a beginning — ours started with two very special dogs named Berkley and Hezekiah.
Back in 2015, we brought home Berkley (our Australian Shepherd) and Hezekiah (our German Shepherd). I had always dreamed of an Aussie, and David always wanted a Shepherd — so we got both! We took them everywhere with us — from long walks in Ritter Park to hiking trips and road adventures. They filled our lives with so much love, laughter, and joy.
Berkley was our “fun police,” always herding any sign of excitement and backing up to sit on us and cuddle whenever he could. Hezekiah was our “forever puppy,” full of energy and heart — always ready to play, fetch, and make us smile. They truly were the best boys.
It was actually Berkley who led David into dog training. As a pup, he struggled with reactivity, and helping him grow through that challenge sparked a passion that changed both of our lives. David became a certified trainer, continued his education, and began dreaming about one day having a place of our own — where dogs could learn, play, and thrive.
Berkley and Hezekiah are no longer with us, but they’ll forever hold a special place in our hearts. We often say we wish they could be here to see it all — and to have the time of their lives playing and making friends, just like we know they would. Their love and joy are still at the heart of everything we do.
Through a lot of prayer, patience, and the support of incredible family and friends, God opened the doors for Berk & Kai’s House to finally become a reality this year. We’re so thankful for the opportunity to serve our community and love on all the dogs who come through our doors.
Here’s to Berkley and Hezekiah — the inspiration behind it all.
Berk & Kai’s House officially opened in October 2025. Their friends loved visiting our home, so we wanted to create a home-away-from-home where dogs could feel the same warmth, love, and excitement.
We love seeing pups excited to visit and hope every pup enjoys coming to Berk & Kai’s House as much as we love having them here.
Meet Our Family
We’re a small, family-run business. It’s just us, caring for your dogs the way we care for our own.
If you want a place where your dog is known by name, greeted with love, and genuinely cared for, we’d love to meet you.
David & Candace Rodes
Co-owners & Trainer
Hi, we’re the husband-and-wife team behind Berk & Kai’s House. Our journey began with our beloved dogs, Berkley and Hezekiah, who changed our lives and inspired our passion for truly understanding dogs. David has been training dogs since 2016 with Ruff Rodes Dog Training and became a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) in 2020. Over the years, he’s worked with thousands of dogs and handlers. We’ve spent years working with dogs of all ages, personalities, and needs. While our business is new, the experience, dedication, and heart behind it are not. The love we had for Berkley and Hezekiah is the same love, patience, and respect we give every dog who walks through our doors. Our goal is to help every dog live their best life, loved, understood, and treated like family.
